Why a Proper Winterization Matters in New York

Putnam County winters get cold enough to freeze water inside underground plumbing. When that happens, the ice expands and cracks the pipe, usually somewhere under the deck where you can't see it. You find out in April when the pool won't hold pressure. A closing that skips the line blowout, or does it halfway, costs you a plumbing repair in the spring. We blow every line, plug every fitting, and drain every piece of equipment on the pad. Nobody sees that part, and it's the part that prevents the repair.

Inground and Above-Ground Closings

Inground closings in the Hudson Valley usually involve a safety cover, a heater, and sometimes a salt system or automation, all of which need to be winterized in the right order. Above-ground closings are quicker but have their own failure points: a pump left full, a hose left connected, a winter cover thrown on loose that collapses under February snow. We close both, every fall, and we'll quote the actual work.

Closing Plus Winter Cover

Closing day is the right time to deal with the cover. If yours is torn, stretched, or missing anchors, we can repair or replace it in the same visit. We install Merlin, Loop-Loc, and Meyco safety covers, mesh or solid, measured for your pool and anchored into the deck. See winter pool covers for how the two types compare.

If your pump or heater struggled through the summer, closing is also the time to decide on repair or replacement so it's not a surprise at opening. See pool equipment repair.

Why us

Why Choose Bobby Bahama Pools for Pool Closing

We open what we close.

If we close your pool, we know exactly what's plugged, stored, and winterized when spring comes. Same crew, no guessing.

10 years of Hudson Valley winters.

We know which fittings crack, which covers sag, and which pumps don't make it to April.

The cover is part of the job.

We don't close a pool and leave a bad cover on it. If it needs attention, you'll hear it from us before the first snow.

Pool Closing FAQ

When is the right time to close a pool in the Hudson Valley?

Once water temperatures stay below 65 degrees, usually late September through mid-October. Closing while the water is still warm invites algae under the cover. Waiting too long risks the first frost.

Do you lower the water level?

Yes, below the skimmer and return lines so nothing freezes in them. For solid covers we leave enough water to support the cover pump.

What winter chemicals do you add?

A winterizing algaecide and a balance adjustment so the water comes off the cover clear in spring. We'll note what went in.

Can you close the pool if I'm not home?

Yes, as long as we have access to the yard and the equipment. Most closings happen while the homeowner is at work.

Should I run the pump until you get there?

Yes. Keep it circulating and the water balanced until closing day. A pool that sits still for two weeks in September closes green.
